ansel adams home page

type: Archive
url: http://www.book.uci.edu/AdamsHome.html
features: Works by Ansel Adams
comment: Ansel Adams was not only a creator of many beautiful images -  he was also the inventor, master and teacher of a technique of photography called the "Zone System".

This technique makes it much easier to visualize and assure a final image, as seen by the viewer, that is true to the photographer's vision at the time of exposure. If you're serious about the craft of photography, you owe it to yourself to understand this system. Even if you don't use the system, your understanding of photography will be enhanced. Look for reprints of his  three "Zone System" manuals.

The Zone System is generally considered to require working with single sheets of film, usually with view cameras. This is so that each exposure is on a separate piece of film, which can be chemically processed according to its unique lighting situation and the photographer's pre-visualization of the final image.

With the coming of inexpensive, high quality digital cameras and the ubiquitous use of digital post-processing, I predict a resurgence of some digital version of Ansel Adams' Zone System.

george eastman house

type: Art museum - International Museum of Photography and Film
url: http://www.eastman.org/
features: Selections from the permanent collection and on-going exhibits
comments: George Eastman founded Kodak and has certainly had a major influence on the history of photography. The name "Kodak" was said to be used by Mr. Eastman because it reminded him of the sound of the early box camera shutter.

Like so many others, my interest in photography started when I was given a Kodak box brownie as a child. Kodak's great free educational materials gave me my first training and a good grounding in the workings of light, color and human perception. Many of the products in my first photo lab, as well as my first films and papers were made by Kodak and sold very inexpensively. I owe a lot to George Eastman's company.

Good Clean Fun

For fine photos that don’t take themselves too seriously, yet deliver a full payload of pleasure, you can’t beat Alan Babbitt’s work.

His simple sensitive seeing and fun frisky color will put that smile back on your pus and take a load off your soul. Too bad more artists don’t have this much fun! And, he has nice photo quotes to go with.

BriefMe review

“Yes, it IS art!”

Doubters are directed to Dmitry Konradt's site. The soulful, colorful, luminous, dark, elemental and elegant photos of Russian Dmitry Konradt are simply not to be missed.

Students will learn from his Spartan seeing and use of light sources in the image. Web publishers should learn from his fearless display of full size images, sans annoying copyright stamps. Those shunning non-people shots may realize that there are two amazing characters deep in drama in every good photo – the photographer and the viewer. B&W only elitists can experience the higher expressive bandwidth of color channels. And for all, a visual feast both delicious and nourishing.

As for yours truly - well, I keep going back for more….

type: Photographer's own photo gallery
url: http://www.pdn-pix.com/MasterTenneson/joyce.html (why do people throw uppercase characters into a URL?)

comment: Beautiful and very personal images of the photographer herself. Joyce Tenneson explorers her spirit, place and growth in a searching series of annotated self-portraits of extreme grace and sincerity. A study in human expression and gesture.

url: http://www.jmoca.org/photo/ulesmann.html
features: A master photographer and early pioneer of photo collage and photo surrealism (print images made from more than one negative).
comment: Very powerful and emotive images. Mr. Uelsmann created a whole new field of photography and also took it to a very high level. Highly recommended. (He may not call his work photo collage or surreal - those are my terms.) November 1997 - Mr. Uelsmann's old home page is defunct, but I found an archived show of his.

The photos are of many types, but have a high level of quality in common. A public contest provides for a vote on the best of the month.

The magazine covers both topics of special interest to Web-centric photographers, such as Web copyright issues, and also more general fare. User submitted equipment reviews are included.

Unique features include the "Copyright Watchdog", where sites alleged to be ripping-off photographer's works are listed.

A "Techniques" section displays user submitted tips.

submit
site
comment: Good to Excellent photos, professional site design, good place to submit work. You can submit your site to their link list, but a link back to them and a display of their logo (above) on your site is REQUIRED.

The site has an elegant and easy to navigate design - under a layer of pimpy ad banners. Unhappily, even the photo galleries aren't free from blinking ads (in the left frame and page top). This gives an otherwise excellent photo site some of the feel of an ugly commercial Web portal. While I can understand the need to fund a site which requires a lot of ongoing work, there must be prettier was to do so. Anyway, don't let the ads keep you from enjoying the worthwhile images and such.

A very flexible and friendly interface makes it easy to submit photos that are already on the Web and to do text formatting.
comment: A lot of excellent photos here that I don't see elsewhere on the Web. Lots of variety. Intelligent critiques with lots of nitty-gritty design and photo commentary. A high level of photo quality is maintained. A very positive and civil group - nary a flame or grumble.

In return for this opportunity, you should be sure to provide feedback on the photos of others.

Highly recommended!

Photographer’s Cyber-Critique

Critique sessions, where everyone comments on each other’s photos into the wee hours, are a valuable activity in photo classes. Now you can submit photos from your Web site for evaluation, or hone your reviewing skills, at Online Photographic Image Critique.

Though neither the first nor the only site for photo review, this is the best. Comments are civil, keen and cogent. Egos are well suppressed and flames absent, a refreshing change from other venues. No distinction is made between amateur and pro. Image quality and visual expression are the main topics. You can even add a link back to your own site.

Of course, you don’t have to be a photographer to enjoy the fine images, add your comments or just look in on a photographer’s cyber-critique.

Thanks to the many hard-working Web creators who have helped us all by researching and publishing links to exciting photo Web sites, or by maintaining rings.  --jim coe
